Wakefield's Ridings Shopping Centre Set for Demolition After 43 Years (2026)

Deputy council leader Jack Hemingway highlighted the necessity for transforming the Ridings, stating, "We want to establish an economy that is sustainable and future-proof, which is why change is essential for the Ridings."

The local government is backing this ambitious project with a substantial investment of £17.9 million, marking what they describe as a "once-in-a-generation opportunity to transform the city center." Hemingway noted that the shopping center, reflective of trends from the 1980s, no longer meets the evolving demands of today’s high streets, making updates imperative.

The redevelopment plans for the Cathedral Quarter promise to breathe new life into the area, featuring a public square, lush green spaces, and a variety of leisure amenities including a cinema, library, and museum, along with parking facilities. In total, about 260 residential flats in the vicinity will also be demolished to pave the way for this exciting transformation.

Regeneration expert Muse has been tapped to spearhead the development, which aims to deliver an impressive 1,000 new homes—comprising sustainable, affordable, and private housing options. However, a timeline for when the shopping center will officially close is still uncertain, with the entire project estimated to take around a decade to complete.

For the businesses currently operating within the Ridings, the council has pledged support in helping them find new locations should they wish to remain in Wakefield.
