The Cavalier men's swim team just shattered a pool record, proving that speed and precision are key on the first day of the 2026 Cavalier Invite!
The 2026 Cavalier Invite, held from February 5th to 7th at the Aquatic and Fitness Center in Charlottesville, VA, kicked off with some electrifying performances. While the UVA women showcased their sprinting prowess earlier, it was the men's turn to make waves tonight.
A New Standard Set in the 200 Free Relay:
The powerhouse quartet of Maximus Williamson (split time: 19.17), Thomas Heilman (19.03), Jack Aikins (18.86), and Noah Powers (19.10) blazed through the 200-meter freestyle relay, clocking in at an astonishing 1:16.16. This remarkable time not only obliterated the previous UVA pool record of 1:16.37 set in 2024, but it also propelled the Cavalier men to an impressive 10th position nationally for the season. What's even more striking is that, with the exception of Jack Aikins, this record-breaking relay was composed entirely of freshmen! This hints at a bright future for the UVA men's swimming program.
But here's where it gets interesting... Because UVA was the sole competitor in this specific event, they essentially swam in clear water, free from the immediate pressure of other teams. However, the Cavaliers also fielded a 'B' relay, which saw Spencer Nicholas deliver a blazing 19.22 split. Of the five swimmers mentioned in the record-breaking relay, only Noah Powers had competed in the morning preliminaries, securing the top seed in the 50 free with a time of 19.86. It's anticipated that many of UVA's top swimmers, both men and women, will continue to participate in various events over the next two days, potentially exploring different strokes and distances.
Beyond the Relay:
The UVA men also dominated the 50-meter freestyle, with freshman Josh Howat touching the wall first in 19.92. In other events, the absence of some top seeds from the morning session opened doors for Towson University swimmers. Teddy Ament secured a win in the 500-meter freestyle, out-dueling teammate Christian Johnson with a time of 4:31.21 to Johnson's 4:38.80. Jackson Cummins also impressed by winning the 200-meter individual medley in 1:53.17, setting a new personal best.
On the women's side, the top seeds from the preliminaries held their ground in the finals. Bryn Greenwaldt claimed victory in the 50-meter freestyle, narrowly missing her lifetime best with a 21.58 from prelims. Teammate Lily Gormsen triumphed in the 500-meter freestyle in 4:48.56, a significant improvement of about two seconds from her leading prelim time. In the 200-meter individual medley, Emma Redman posted a strong 1:58.56, just slightly off her personal best from last year's meet.
And this is the part most people miss... While the UVA men dominated their 200 free relay, the women's team did not field a competitor in that event. Instead, William & Mary claimed the win with a time of 1:33.20.
The competition continues tomorrow with preliminary heats featuring the 100 butterfly, 400 IM, 200 freestyle, 100 backstroke, and 100 breaststroke.
