In a poignant turn of events, Sir Patrick Duffy, the esteemed former Labour MP and defence minister, has passed away at the remarkable age of 105 after grappling with a brief illness. This news was shared by a close family friend. Sir Patrick's demise occurred on January 2, and he is widely recognized as the longest-living former Member of Parliament in the United Kingdom.
Kevin Meagher, a writer who collaborated with Duffy on his memoirs, described him as akin to a "living historical jukebox." He noted that engaging with Duffy was like pressing buttons on this jukebox and asking questions about his experiences, such as, "What was it like to meet former Prime Minister Clement Attlee?"
Duffy's illustrious life included being knighted by Queen Elizabeth II and also receiving a papal knighthood from Pope John Paul II. His journey began in the thick of World War II, where he served valiantly in the Fleet Air Arm and miraculously survived a plane crash in the Orkney Islands.
His political career kicked off in 1950, and he made his way into the House of Commons for the first time in 1963, following a victory in the Colne Valley byelection. He continued to serve as the MP for Sheffield Attercliffe from 1970 until his retirement in 1992.
During the late 1970s, under James Callaghan's Labour government, Duffy held the position of Parliamentary Under Secretary for the Royal Navy. Notably, Meagher highlighted Duffy's courage in 1981 when he was the only MP to publicly criticize former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher regarding the death of Republican hunger striker Bobby Sands. Interestingly, despite their earlier tensions, Duffy and Thatcher later shared tea together, especially during his tenure as president of the NATO Assembly in the 1980s.
In a heartfelt statement penned by Meagher and endorsed by Duffy’s family, they reflected on his extraordinary life filled with achievements: "Patrick leaves behind family and friends from all walks of life who will deeply miss his warmth, humor, and remarkable ability to recall personalities and events from a century gone by."
The statement further elaborated, "Patrick lived a life rich with accomplishments, earning the esteem of his colleagues alongside the love and affection from his numerous family and friends. His absence will be profoundly felt."
