Sam Prendergast compared to Matthieu Jalibert by Eddie Jones as France's depth of talent hailed (2026)

Eddie Jones, the head coach of Japan’s national rugby team, recently made a striking comparison between young Irish fly-half Sam Prendergast and the talented French player Matthieu Jalibert. This observation comes after their matchup in the opening game of the 2026 Six Nations, held at the iconic Stade de France, where the French team secured a decisive victory over Ireland.

The final score gave an impression of a comfortable win for France, but the match itself unfolded dramatically, showcasing a tale of two distinct halves. Although France entered halftime with a commanding lead of 22 points, they struggled to maintain that momentum in the second half, allowing Ireland to score 14 points before finally adding to their own tally in the dying moments of the game.

At certain points during the match, France's performance was nothing short of spectacular. Their ability to move the ball quickly, whether from the ruck or in open play, was truly impressive, and the finishing skills of player Louis Bielle-Biarrey captivated spectators.

Despite facing various challenges such as injuries and exclusions from their squad, France continues to be a formidable force in this year’s Six Nations. Their depth of talent is remarkably robust, and it’s no coincidence that such an abundance of skilled players has emerged simultaneously. Jones attributed this success to a strategic decision by the French Rugby Union, particularly following their hosting of the World Cup in 2023.

On the Rugby Unity podcast, Jones elaborated, saying, "If we take a step back regarding the French team, the remarkable depth in their talent pool stems from a deliberate strategy implemented by the French Rugby Union. After being awarded the World Cup in 2023, they restructured their approach, collaborating with clubs to adjust the number of foreign players permitted in the Top 14 league.

"Consequently, instead of seeing teams dominated by international players, we are witnessing a surge of emerging local talent. The results are evident. The level of competition among big, strong, and tall athletes is astonishing. Just a year ago, Damian Penaud was often discussed as one of the top wings globally, yet now he struggles to secure a place in the matchday squad. This speaks volumes about their depth of talent."

While France dazzled on the field, Ireland appeared to falter in comparison, failing to showcase the same prowess they once had. Stricken by injuries, suspensions, and a challenging period of transition, the Irish team bore little resemblance to the side that was previously considered a favorite for the 2023 World Cup.

Jones noted, "Ireland is currently navigating through one of those complex phases. I have empathy for Andy Farrell. He has experienced both the highs and lows of coaching, and now faces challenges due to injuries. Depth in the squad is becoming a pressing concern."

One specific area where Ireland is particularly struggling is at the fly-half position. Farrell chose to start the 22-year-old Prendergast over the more seasoned Jack Crowley, a decision that sparked mixed reactions. While Prendergast displayed moments of potential, such as a few impressive passes, he also showed signs of vulnerability that raised concerns among Irish supporters. His defensive performance was particularly alarming; despite completing 13 tackles, he missed seven, which was significantly higher than any defender on the French side.

Though he still has room for improvement, Jones believes that Prendergast deserves time to develop his skills. "He has a promising career ahead of him," said the 66-year-old coach. "Jalibert, for instance, has six or seven years of experience over him and faced criticism early in his Test career for being inconsistent. Growth takes time, and Ireland is in a tough period right now."

Looking ahead, Ireland will face Italy at home on February 14th, hoping to turn their fortunes around and reignite their Six Nations campaign.
