Hold onto your textbooks, because the University of Oklahoma is about to experience a major shake-up! The highly anticipated College Football Playoff game between Oklahoma and Alabama on December 19th isn't just a sporting event—it's a campus-wide transformation. But here's where it gets tricky: balancing the excitement of game day with the needs of students, faculty, and staff. And this is the part most people miss: the intricate dance of schedule adjustments and operational changes required to make it all work seamlessly.
In preparation for the big game, the university is implementing a series of carefully planned modifications to academic and campus operations. Here's the breakdown:
Campus Closures and Schedule Changes:
- Norman Campus: Brace yourselves, students and employees—normal operations will be suspended on Friday, December 19th. In-person classes, including those for Norman-based programs at OU-Tulsa, are canceled. But don't worry, final exams originally scheduled for that day have been thoughtfully rescheduled. For instance, the MWF 1 p.m. course exam will now take place on Thursday, December 18th, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Is this enough notice for students to prepare adequately? Weigh in below!
- OU Health Campus: It's business as usual until 2 p.m. on Friday, December 19th. After that, academic and campus operations will pause. Students on rotations or in clinicals, don't forget to check with your faculty or preceptors for updated schedules. Final exam changes will be communicated by your college, so keep an eye on your notifications.
- OU-Tulsa: Students, faculty, and staff, your programs will follow specific guidance. Norman campus employees at OU-Tulsa will have a full day of suspended operations on December 19th.
Online Programs: Good news for OU Online students—your programs remain unaffected, as academic instruction wraps up before the playoff game.
Employee Work Schedules:
- Norman Campus: Only essential employees need to report in person, following their game day schedules. Non-essential employees will be granted administrative leave, with no remote work allowed. Does this arrangement fairly accommodate all staff members? Share your thoughts!
- OU Health Campus: Employees, stick to your regular schedules until 2 p.m. on December 19th. After that, only essential personnel should remain on campus. OU Health and OU Health Clinics will continue operating as usual.
Parking, Transportation, and Access:
- Parking: As per game day protocol, certain lots must be cleared by 6 p.m. on December 18th. Housing permit holders, your lots will remain accessible. Commuter permits are valid in any paid lot on game days.
- CART Shuttles: On December 19th, CART will operate its game day route exclusively. Regular routes will be suspended.
- Road Closures: To ensure smooth traffic flow and pedestrian safety, some roads near campus will be closed or restricted. Visit SoonerSports.com for detailed information.
- Building Access: Most Norman campus buildings will close after regular academic operations on December 18th and reopen on December 22nd. Exceptions include the Bizzell Memorial Library, Oklahoma Memorial Union, and Campus Dining, which will maintain their normal schedules.
Looking Ahead:
All campuses will resume normal operations on Monday, December 22nd. For more game day details, visit SoonerSports.com. And don't forget, the Fall 2025 Commencement will proceed as planned on December 20th. Check ou.edu/commencement for the full schedule.
Food for Thought: As we navigate these temporary changes, it's worth considering the broader impact of such events on campus life. Do major sporting events enhance or disrupt the academic experience? How can universities better balance these priorities? Let’s spark a conversation in the comments!
