In a bold move that signals a new chapter for the franchise, the St. Louis Cardinals have officially traded their seasoned third baseman, Nolan Arenado, to the Arizona Diamondbacks. This transaction, which can largely be interpreted as a strategic salary dump, not only alleviates financial burdens but also paves the way for emerging talent, particularly top prospect JJ Wetherholt. In exchange, the Cardinals received right-handed pitcher Jack Martinez, who was drafted in the eighth round in 2025.
As part of this deal, the Cardinals will absorb a significant portion of Arenado’s contract, covering 74% of what remains over the next two years. For context, the Diamondbacks will take on $5 million of Arenado's salary for 2026 and $6 million for 2027, while he is owed $27 million in 2026 and $15 million in 2027.
The Diamondbacks have been actively searching for a suitable replacement for Eugenio Suarez, who was traded to the Mariners last season. Interestingly, with the organization now indicating they won’t trade second baseman Ketel Marte, this acquisition could potentially hinder Jordan Lawlar’s chances of getting playing time in the major leagues. As it stands, Marte will start at second base, Geraldo Perdomo is secured at shortstop, and Arenado is set to take over at third base.
While this move might complicate Lawlar's ascent in the majors, it simultaneously opens the door for Wetherholt, widely regarded as one of the premier prospects in baseball, to seize an opportunity with St. Louis. The Cardinals have been rumored to be evaluating trade offers for Brendan Donovan, their current second baseman. At present, Donovan remains on the roster, with Masyn Winn expected to take over shortstop duties and Nolan Gorman transitioning back to third base, where his defensive skills shine. Should Donovan be traded, Wetherholt would naturally step in as the second baseman.

Nolan Arenado, 3B

Arenado has long been recognized as one of the elite third basemen in Major League Baseball over the past decade or so. However, as he approaches his 35th birthday, he faces the pressing need for a resurgence in his performance at the plate. Coming off a challenging 2025 season, which saw him post a disappointing .239/.289/.377 batting line—the worst of his career—Arenado has seen a decline in his power numbers, averaging only 18 home runs per season over the last three years compared to his prime output of 35-40 homers. While he still possesses a commendable understanding of the strike zone and is tough to strike out, the authority with which he makes contact has diminished significantly. His exit velocities and hard-hit percentages have unfortunately dipped to the lower tiers among MLB third basemen. Historically, Arenado boasts a career slugging percentage of .507, but he has struggled to maintain a slugging percentage above .400 in recent seasons. Nonetheless, he remains a formidable presence on defense, having earned ten Gold Glove awards, showcasing his above-average range and fielding skills at third base.
CARDINALS ACQUIRE:
Jack Martinez, RHP
Age: 22
Martinez was selected by the Diamondbacks in the eighth round of the 2025 draft. He has a diverse collegiate background, having played at Division III Trinity University (Texas), Louisiana-Lafayette, and finally Arizona State during the 2025 season, where he served as a starter. In his sole season with the Sun Devils, he recorded a 6-4 record with a 5.47 ERA, coupled with an impressive strikeout rate of 32.3%, although his walk rate was less favorable at 9.7%.
His fastball typically ranges from 93 to 95 mph, occasionally reaching up to 97 mph, but he has encountered challenges with command. Conversely, he has shown a promising ability to place his low-80s slider and 78-82 mph changeup effectively. If Martinez can enhance his control, he could evolve into a reliable back-end starter at the professional level, although his skill set may ultimately align more closely with that of a relief pitcher. Notably, he did not rank within the Diamondbacks’ Top 30 prospects for 2026, nor was he listed among the next tier of promising pitching talents in the organization.
