Meta and Google are turning to NextEra Energy to satisfy their ever-growing demand for datacenter power. This partnership is a significant development in the energy sector, as it involves one of the country's largest power companies, NextEra Energy, and two major tech giants, Meta and Google.

NextEra Energy has secured a deal with Meta, adding 2.5 GW of new renewable projects to its portfolio. This agreement is part of a broader collaboration with Google, which already has a capacity of 3.5 GW. Together, these partnerships account for approximately 18% of NextEra Energy's total generating capacity, highlighting the growing power demands of hyperscale customers.

NextEra Energy is a publicly traded company with a substantial net generation and storage capacity of around 72 GW. It owns Florida Power & Light, serving over 6 million customers, with a significant portion relying on natural gas or nuclear power. The company's clean energy division, NextEra Energy Resources, boasts a 35 GW capacity dedicated to renewable energy, primarily through wind turbines (64%), nuclear (17%), and solar power (15%).

The agreement with Meta involves 13 projects nationwide, totaling 2.5 GW of power, to be operational between 2026 and 2028. This includes nine solar projects in Texas, New Mexico, Indiana, and other states, contributing 2.1 GW of capacity. Additionally, NextEra is working with Google to develop digital operational platforms for power companies, leveraging Google's software expertise.

In this collaboration, NextEra will utilize Google's weather prediction analytics to optimize power delivery through aging infrastructure. By combining their data, they aim to enhance forecasting accuracy. NextEra will also integrate Google's AI capabilities to predict equipment issues, manage supply chain challenges, and schedule maintenance crews more efficiently.

The first commercial product resulting from this partnership will be available on Google Cloud Marketplace by mid-2026. Furthermore, NextEra and Google are planning to rapidly develop multi-gigawatt datacenter campuses across the US, with three facilities already in the works and more locations identified for new datacenters and expansions.

This partnership addresses the critical need for reliable power in the datacenter sector, as highlighted by industry experts. Uptime Institute emphasizes the importance of grid power for datacenters, while Gartner warns that those without dedicated power supplies risk failure. The relationship between NextEra, Meta, and Google showcases the industry's focus on power as a solution and a source for AI-related challenges in datacenters.

The collaboration also involves a significant nuclear power initiative. NextEra had previously shut down the Duane Arnold nuclear power plant in Iowa due to a customer's withdrawal from a long-term power purchase agreement. However, with Google's involvement, the plant is set to be reactivated, contributing 615 MW to the grid, as part of a broader relationship between the companies.
