Bold reality check: roundabouts aren’t optional; they’re safety mechanisms that demand our attention, patience, and proper technique. The Carson City Sheriff’s Office wants to refresh your understanding of how to navigate roundabouts correctly, of which the city features one multi-lane roundabout at S. Carson St. and S. Stewart St. and several single-lane variants elsewhere.
Key guidelines for using roundabouts safely:
- Yield to entering traffic: Vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists already in the circle have the right of way. Enter only when you can do so safely without forcing others to stop or brake abruptly.
- Travel direction: All traffic in a roundabout moves counterclockwise.
- Approach and lane selection: Slow down as you near the roundabout and pick your lane based on your intended exit:
- Left lane: Use this lane to turn left, complete a U-turn, or continue straight ahead.
- Right lane: Use this lane to turn right or continue straight.
- Enter safely: Do not rush onto the circle. Wait for a clear gap in traffic and proceed only when it is safe. The driver is responsible for ensuring the path is clear.
- Stay in your lane: Once inside the roundabout, keep to the lane you chose and avoid unnecessary lane changes.
- Exit properly: Signal with your right turn signal as you approach and exit the roundabout.
Common crash causes in roundabouts include:
- Not yielding the right of way to those already in the circle
- Excessive speed
- Uncontrolled lane changes or failing to stay in your lane
- Rear-end collisions with vehicles waiting to enter
