A leadership showdown looms for Australia's Liberal Party, with two ambitious conservatives, Angus Taylor and Andrew Hastie, unable to reach a consensus on who should replace Sussan Ley. Despite a clandestine meeting before a memorial service for their former colleague, Katie Allen, the rivals failed to settle their differences.
The party's internal dynamics are in flux, with current and former Liberals gathering in Melbourne to pay their respects to Dr. Allen, a "woman of rare grace, intellect, and courage" according to Ms. Ley. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese expressed his surprise at the timing of the leadership discussions, calling it "extraordinary" to hold such a meeting before a memorial.
Supporters of Ms. Ley take heart from the ongoing standoff between Mr. Taylor and Mr. Hastie, believing it strengthens her position ahead of the federal parliament's first full sitting week. Liberal sources suggest Mr. Hastie is more eager to challenge Ms. Ley, while Mr. Taylor is inclined to bide his time.
Senator James Paterson, a fellow conservative and shadow cabinet member, voiced his support for Ms. Ley, stating, "If you don't support a leader, the responsible course is to tell them and resign. I haven't done either, so you can assume I continue to support Sussan."
But here's where it gets controversial: influential figures outside the party room, including Tony Abbott, are calling for an end to Ms. Ley's leadership after just eight months. Peta Credlin, Mr. Abbott's former chief of staff, penned a scathing opinion piece, arguing that the Liberals should "unite under a leader with authority" to counter One Nation's rising poll numbers.
And this is the part most people miss: the unravelling of the Coalition has also sparked speculation about David Littleproud's leadership of the Nationals. Nationals MP Colin Boyce threatened a spill, despite little support from his colleagues. Mr. Littleproud, citing the looming spill, declined to meet with Ms. Ley, further straining relations between the two party leaders.
Nationals Senator Bridget McKenzie emphasized the party's unity, calling Mr. Boyce's challenge a "complete surprise." Deputy Kevin Hogan praised Mr. Littleproud's consultative leadership style and his "complete support" from most colleagues.
