Uncover the Secrets of the Past: Thetford's Ancient Treasures
In a remarkable discovery, archaeologists unearthed a treasure trove of ancient artifacts at a construction site near Thetford, Norfolk. Among the findings were two incredibly rare Iron Age objects, a battle trumpet, and a boar's head flag standard, offering a glimpse into the past that is truly awe-inspiring.
The excavation, led by Pre-Construct Archaeology, revealed a hoard of artifacts dating back to around 50 BC and AD 50. At the heart of this discovery was the most complete battle trumpet, or carnyx, ever found in Europe. Crafted from extremely thin sheets of metal, this ancient instrument has survived 2,000 years in the ground, with its pipe, mouthpiece, and bell all remarkably intact. Carnyces, as Gary Trimble, senior project officer, explains, are incredibly rare, and this find is truly special.
But that's not all! The hoard also included a boar's head flag standard, a symbol of strength and power. Made from sheet bronze, this flag would have been held aloft in battle, serving as a rallying point for troops.
