The fate of a critically endangered mammal, the ebony tree, and a leading US guitar maker are all inextricably intertwined, and the solution lies in an unlikely source: elephant poop. This is a story of how a simple fact-finding mission has transformed into a collaborative effort to ensure the long-term prosperity of the ebony tree, and by extension, the guitar industry. The key to this story is the elephant's role in dispersing and germinating ebony tree seeds, which has been revealed through camera traps and dung analysis. This discovery has led to a unique partnership between businesses, local communities, and scientists, dubbed the Ebony Project, to protect the ecosystem of the Congo Basin. The project's earliest research revelations showed that ebony trees do not grow quickly, with saplings taking as long as 100 years to reach full maturity. This has led to a plan to distribute seeds among the Indigenous Baka communities that share the basin's forests with the elephants. The Baka communities were offered ownership of the planted ebony trees and were given seeds for fruit and medicinal tree seeds, including avocado and mango, which grow considerably faster. This has created jobs and transferable skills that are already benefitting the 13 partner communities the Ebony Project has worked with.
