Hong Kong Airlines A330 Business Class Review: Is It Worth It? | Lunar New Year Flight to Tokyo (2026)

Hong Kong Airlines A330 Business Class: A Mixed Bag of Experiences

Hello, fellow travelers! I'm back from Japan, where I recently flew Hong Kong Airlines' Airbus A330-300 business class on a 3.5-hour journey from Hong Kong to Tokyo Narita. It was a challenging booking process, as Lunar New Year holiday flights on All Nippon Airways, Cathay Pacific, and Japan Airlines were either sold out or exorbitantly priced, with no award availability. But I'm glad I found a reasonable fare for Hong Kong Airlines business class, giving me a chance to fly with the airline again.

Hong Kong Airlines shares owners with China's Hainan Airlines, and the airline has had a turbulent past. For a brief period, they aimed to expand globally and compete with Cathay Pacific, even acquiring A350s (I reviewed their A350 business class here: https://onemileatatime.com/hong-kong-airlines-business-class-a350-review/). However, financial struggles led them to downsize, discard their A350s, and focus on other areas.

So, what's the verdict on Hong Kong Airlines' A330 business class today? Well, it's a mixed bag. The crew was friendly, and having a flat bed on an Asian flight is always a plus. But when competing with Hong Kong's top players like Cathay Pacific, the experience falls short in various aspects, from cabin aesthetics and maintenance to amenities, entertainment, and Wi-Fi availability.

In this post, I'll share my initial impressions and then provide a comprehensive trip report. Here's a breakdown:

  • Lounge Experience: Hong Kong Airlines' Club Autus lounge didn't set the right tone. It was poorly maintained, with broken facilities and a cheesy design. The food and drink options were limited, lacking the variety and quality one expects from a top-tier airline.
  • Business Class Seats: The A330's business class seats are okay, but not exceptional. They're in a staggered arrangement, and the cabin feels cramped due to the narrow aisle. The finishes could be improved, and the overall condition of the seats leaves something to be desired.
  • Entertainment: The seat back monitors offer a decent selection of movies and TV shows, but it's still limited. The lack of Wi-Fi on these flights is a significant drawback, especially for longer journeys.
  • Soft Product: The crew was friendly and accommodating, and the amenities were adequate. Breakfast was served with a variety of options, and the filtered coffee was a nice touch. However, the cabin lighting could be improved for a more comfortable flight experience.

Bottom Line: Hong Kong Airlines faces a tough challenge competing with Cathay Pacific, one of the world's best airlines. While their business class is passable for a short flight, it falls short on longer routes due to the lack of Wi-Fi. I'd consider flying them again if they offer the best schedule or price, but I'd still choose Cathay Pacific for a more consistent and luxurious experience.
