The Road to Glory
On Friday, the girls from Carmel, Indiana, showcased their incredible depth and talent, setting the stage for a historic win. With their eyes on the prize, they faced a formidable challenge, but their determination shone through in the prelims.
One of the most thrilling moments came in the 200 IM, where sophomores Ellie Clarke and Leah Debosch, along with senior Lucy Enoch, dominated the race, securing three spots in the A-Final. This event was just one of five where Carmel held the top seed after day one, showcasing their dominance across various disciplines.
Stars of the Meet
Molly Sweeney, a Tennessee commit and the standout performer for Carmel, stole the show on day one. She dominated both the 100 fly and the 100 breast, showcasing her versatility and talent. Her time in the 100 breast was just 0.06 seconds off her personal best, a remarkable achievement.
But here's where it gets controversial... Sweeney, a three-time defending State Champion in the 200 IM, made a strategic switch to the 100 fly this year. While she was the favorite to win the 200 IM, Carmel's depth in that event is so strong that she opted for a different challenge. A bold move, indeed!
The Chase for Second
While Carmel leads the pack, the battle for second place is heating up. Carroll High School and Fishers High School had impressive days and are locked in a tight race. Fishers, in particular, has a bright future with a pair of talented freshmen, Audrey Wolf and Ashlyn Hayes, who both qualified for A Finals in multiple events.
And this is the part most people miss... The Carroll girls faced an early setback when their 200 medley relay team added time from Sectionals, missing out on crucial points. However, their sprint free group, led by junior Maris Williams, stepped up and pulled them back into contention. Williams, along with her teammate Kate Fetters, dominated the 50 free, setting the stage for an exciting finals day.
Finals Day Preview
