A recent survey has revealed a concerning gap in emergency preparedness for cardiac events among teenagers, highlighting the need for improved awareness and action from both schools and families. The poll, conducted by the University of Michigan Health C.S. Mott Children's Hospital, found that while parents are aware of the risk of sudden cardiac arrest in teens, they may not be fully equipped to respond effectively. Only about half of parents are aware of the presence of automated external defibrillators (AEDs) in their teen's school, and even fewer know their location or feel confident in the staff's ability to use them in an emergency. This lack of preparedness could have dire consequences, as every second counts in such situations. The survey also revealed a disparity in the knowledge and action of parents and teens. While parents are concerned about the risk, they may not be taking proactive steps to ensure their teen's heart health. Only about one in seven parents say their teen has ever had a heart evaluation, despite the fact that more than a third believe all teens should be evaluated for heart disease. This highlights the need for better communication and education about the importance of heart evaluations for teenagers. The survey also found that while parents are willing to receive CPR and AED training, fewer teens are receiving the same training. Only about one in five parents say their teen has CPR training, and just one in 15 say their teen has been trained to use an AED. This disparity in training between parents and teens could be a significant factor in the response to cardiac emergencies. The findings of this survey emphasize the need for improved awareness and action from both schools and families to ensure that teenagers are prepared to respond to cardiac emergencies. By increasing awareness and providing training, we can improve the chances of survival for those who experience sudden cardiac arrest.
