Spring Fest is soon approaching, and we know that many students are looking forward to a fun-filled weekend. Shaw Wellness is offering some tips for how to balance your fun and safety:
Set your intentions and plan ahead:
You may find yourself with many options to choose from for social events, but it’s important not to stretch yourself too thin. Set goals ahead of the weekend for the events you definitely want to attend, and make sure to schedule downtime as well. It is okay if you don’t make it to everything! Additionally, plan the week before to get the work you need to do out of the way, so that you don’t find yourself swamped come Sunday. Consider planning some extra library sessions with friends in the days leading up to Spring Fest.
Use sun protection:
If you will be outside during the day – – make sure to apply sunscreen. If you need some, Shaw Wellness Institute has samples in GATE Market, as well as the entryway of Shaw.

Nourish your body:
If you choose to drink, please be aware of the following:
- Because alcohol is technically a toxin, our bodies will always prioritize the breakdown of alcohol over food, which decreases nutrient availability.
- Since alcohol is not a fuel source, it should never be consumed in place of food.
Consuming a balanced meal before drinking can also slow down the absorption of alcohol, which can reduce its harmful impact on the body. Include protein, heart-healthy fats, and complex carbohydrates in your pre-drinking meal. Examples include:- Bagel with peanut butter and banana
Chicken sandwich or veggie burger with cheese plus rice and beans
Omelet with cheese and vegetables with whole wheat toast and avocado
Grain bowl with chicken or tofu with vegetables and olive oil or dressing
- Bagel with peanut butter and banana
