From photochemical pathways to early animation devices to homosexuality in the Arab world — undergraduate research topics explored this summer by students and faculty were presented at yesterday’s poster session.

Held in the Ho Science Center’s Cunniff Commons, the event featured 59 students who showed off their hard work to the community. For some, this will serve as practice — summer research can often result in the presentation of papers at professional meetings, or in publication in journals.

The students, ranging from rising sophomores to rising seniors, represent all disciplines, including physics, English, geology, art, chemistry, and educational studies.

This year, the following received distinction:

Michael Chavinda ’17 and Duy Tran ’17 for “Drawing: The Elephant in the Coding Room” (, Assistant Professor Elodie Fourquet)

Samantha Braver ’18 for “Algorhythm: Experimenting with Generative Design” (, Assistant Professor Wenhua Shi)

Ellen Hutchinson ’18, Gillian Murray ’17, and Gian Sepulveda ’17 for “The Association between Physical Activity and the Body’s Circadian Rhythm” (, Associate Professor Krista Ingram)

Honorable Mention to Corrina Moncada ’18 and Eric Alvarado ’18 for “Investigating the Antibacterial Properties of Rhus typhina” (Biology, Associate Professor and Academic Director Frank Frey)
