Professor Mike Levere received a grant from the Social Security Administration to do a five-year study called 鈥淎ssisting Children to SSI鈥. The project will use Medicaid data to identify children with significant health issues who are not receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI) disability benefits that they may qualify for. The team will then conduct a randomized controlled trial that offers information about SSI or information together with application assistance to try to help these families qualify for benefits. It will therefore identify strategies that may promote take-up of this critical safety net program, and potentially in turn the effects on these children and their families of receiving benefits.
